James Madison announces suspensions for two players

James Madison has handed down suspensions for two players who were involved in an off-campus altercation with each other, the school announced in a release on Tuesday.

Junior guard Andre Nation and sophomore forward Tom Vodanovich were previously suspended indefinitely on Oct. 6, but the school has come back with a more formal suspension plan.

The 6-foot-5 Nation will be suspended from the team’s preseason scrimmage, home exhibition game and the first five games of the regular season while the 6-foot-8 Vodanovich is suspended for the scrimmage, home exhibition and first two games of the regular season.

For Nation, this is the second time he has been suspended at James Madison, after serving a 15-game suspension at the beginning of last season for a violation of athletic department policy.

According to James Madison head coach Matt Brady, who released a statement in the school’s release, Nation will be given a zero-tolerance policy during the rest of his time at the school.

“As the Head Coach of our men’s basketball program, I am responsible for the development of the student-athletes in our team,” Brady said in the release. “This means development of each young man to the highest standard and to ensure they conduct themselves in a manner that brings pride to our program and the University. To that end, given the most recent actions of two of our student-athletes there will be a zero tolerance from this point forward with regard to Andre and his involvement with our program. Any future violation on his behalf will result in him being removed permanently as a member our men’s basketball program. Tom realizes that if he fails to uphold the high standards of our program at any point going forward he faces the risk of losing the privilege of representing our team or attending this university.”

Nation averaged 15.4 points per game last season and is a huge difference-maker for the Dukes if he’s on the floor. He’s a potential All-CAA player and a potent scorer and if he can’t get it together, Nation could be searching for a new home. Vodanovich averaged 4.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during his freshman campaign last season.
