Jeremiah Martin verbally commits to Memphis, provides additional perimeter depth

With Dominic Magee transferring from the school in late November and Pookie Powell doing the season at the end of the season, Memphis head coach Josh Pastner had room for another player at the point. Kedren Johnson and D’Marnier Cunningham return next season, but with both being seniors there was a need for some additional depth with an eye towards the future.

Saturday afternoon Memphis picked up a point guard, as 2015 prospect Jeremiah Martin announced that he’d committed to the American Athletic Conference program by way of his Twitter account. Martin’s a Memphis native who earlier in his high school career verbally committed to attend Louisiana Tech.

Martin’s the fifth commitment in the 2015 class for Memphis, which is led by brothers K.J. and Dedric Lawson. Four-star center Nick Marshall will give the Tigers some additional size to back up returnees Austin Nichols and Shaq Goodwin, and like Martin incoming freshman Randall Broddie is also a point guard.

Both guards should be able to learn from Johnson as freshmen, with the Vanderbilt transfer playing his best basketball of the season in the month of March. A full offseason to work on his body should lead to him being the lead guard Pastner needs to contend in the American, with Cunningham and the two freshmen serving as Johnson’s backups.
