Rice isn’t moving on from its heartbreaking loss to UTEP.

The Owls are filing an official inquiry into the controversial finish over the weekend in which the Miners’ Jordan Lathon hit a jumper as time expired, but a clock issue means the shot may not have gotten off in time, according to KVIA-TV.

UTEP was inbounding with .5 seconds remaining, but the clock did not start as it should when Lathon took possession. Had it, Lathon’s game-winner would have come after the buzzer.

“I don’t think I have ever seen a conference office overturn the outcome of a game,” Rice athletic director Joe Karlgaard said, “but certainly if a mistake was made, an acknowledgement that it was and some sort of corrective action to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”

A win is something both teams were in desperate need of Saturday as UTEP had lost three-straight while Rice had lost three of five. Even if C-USA acknowledges the clock’s tardy start, it seems highly unlikely anything beyond that would change.
