Josh Cunningham, the redshirt sophomore forward suffered a gruesome looking knee injury at the end of Dayton’s 77-72 win over Alabama, on the road, on Tuesday afternoon.

In the closing seconds, Cunningham slammed over a defender, but on the way down his left leg got twisted. He was carried off the court.

On Thursday, Dayton head coach Archie Miller updated Cunningham’s status.

“From a positive standpoint, I think were out of the woods, so to speak, on knee damage; surgically repaired knee issues,” Miller told reporters. “I think we have some bruising in there. The biggest concern now is the specifics of his lower leg as it got bent back. That’s where we’re unclear of how serve the damage is in his ankle and tibia area. We know he has bruising. We’re just not sure how much sure about how much else has gone on there. [He has] more doctors to see in the next 24-36 hours is going to give us a complete image. But the one thing I can say is I feel good. We were very, very disappointed that maybe he had done some severe damage to the knee.”

In two games, Cunningham was averaging 12.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He sat out last season after transferring from Bradley and was expected to be a key piece alongside the frontline. The Flyers are already without Kendall Pollard, who has not played this season after suffering a thigh contusion during an exhibition game this preseason.

Dayton returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts No. 17 Saint Mary’s.
