P.J. Washington gives Kentucky its second commit of the day

A busy day of SEC recruiting saw Kentucky come out as the biggest winner.

Shocker.

Hours after five-star center Nick Richards decided to join Big Blue Nation, P.J. Washington announced his commitment to the Wildcats.

Washington, a 6-foot-7 power forward who is playing at Findlay Prep in Nevada, is considered the No. 17 overall player by Rivals. Several weeks ago, he trimmed his list of finalists to three. Kentucky edged out North Carolina and UNLV.

Like De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk, we expect Bam Adebayo to be part of the one-and-done pipeline John Calipari has mastered during his time in Lexington. Even with his impending departure, and Derek Willis graduating, the Kentucky frontline looks to be really deep for the 2017-18 season. Tai Wynyard, the redshirt freshman from New Zealand and sophomore Issac Humphries will likely be back. While I see great upside in the long term for Wenyen Gabriel and Sacha Killeya-Jones, I’d expect both of them to be back for their sophomore seasons.

Washington was an all-Nike EYBL second team selection this summer, leading Team Penny out of Tennessee to the Peach Jam semifinals. He averaged 16.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in 23 appearances during the spring and summer.

Kentucky bookended a huge recruiting day for the SEC. Aside from the two Kentucky bigs making their announcements, Rayshaun Hammonds decided to stay in state and committed to Georgia, while Collin Sexton, one of the best available point guards picked Avery Johnson and Alabama.
