Chris Beard tapped into the junior college ranks once again this weekend, reeling in point guard Hyron Edwards. The former top-100 recruit committed to Texas Tech on Saturday.

Brian Snow of Scout.com was the first to report the news. The three-star speedster becomes the first commit in Texas Tech’s Class of 2017. He will have two more years of eligibility.

Edwards, the 6-foot-1 floor general, failed to qualify coming out of high school. As a member of the Class of 2015, he had racked up offers from Indiana, Purdue, Illinois and Cal. The academic detour led him to Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. This past season, he averaged 13.7 points, shooting 47 percent from the field, while averaging 5.5 assists per game.

By the time the veteran point guard hits the Lubbock campus, guards Keenan Evans and Devon Thomas will all be seniors. Beard had success with junior college products in his lone season as the head coach Arkansas-Little Rock. Down the line, in the 2017-18 season, Edwards could play an important role.
