Austin Nichols, Kyle Guy shine for Virginia in Spain

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I think that Austin Nichols is going to have a mammoth season for Virginia, and through Virginia’s first two games of a foreign tour in Spain, that prediction looks prescient.

Nichols is averaging 15.5 points in the two wins, leading the ‘Hoos in scoring. He’s a perfect fit for what Tony Bennett wants out of his big men. He’s a shot blocker and a good positional defender that can score in the post and will help on the glass. He’s also had a year to acclimate to Virginia’s defensive system and he’ll enter this season as a redshirt junior.

He’s going to be a monster, and he’ll be a major reason why Virginia is going to once against compete for an ACC title.

Also of note from Virginia’s first two games:

  • McDonald’s All-American freshman Kyle Guy had 17 points in the second game. I’ve thought Guy’s transition to the college level will be slower than some anticipated, but if he’s already scoring 17 points in exhibitions with this group, maybe he’ll have a bigger impact that expected.
  • When Ty Jerome committed to UVa, many thought he had a shot to be the next London Perrantes for Tony Bennett. If the first game of the tour, Jerome hit two threes in the final minutes to give the ‘Hoos a 78-76 win. That sounds exactly like something London would do.
