Former Oklahoma State point guard Brooks Thompson, who had spent the last decade as a head coach at UT-San Antonio, died on Thursday night.

He was 45 years old.

“The UTSA family is very saddened to learn that Brooks Thompson passed away on Thursday,” UTSA Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Michelle, his daughters Ryan Michelle, Brooke and Addison, and the rest of his family in this difficult time.”

Thompson had been admitted to the hospital in April in critical condition due to double organ failure, and over the course of the last two months had spent the majority of his name in the hospital.

After transferring into Oklahoma State from Texas A&M, Thompson was the 27th pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. He spent four seasons in the NBA. He parted ways with UTSA in March following a 5-26 season.

“On behalf of every one of my Cowboy teammates, our hearts go out to Michelle and the girls,” Doug Gottlieb, another former Cowboy point guard, wrote in a statement on FaceBook. “We loved Brooks and will honor the great father he was by picking up the torch as a family and helping out.”
