Florida lands key transfer, Rick Barry’s youngest son

Canyon Barry is headed to Florida to finish out his collegiate career.

Barry played the first three seasons of his career at Charleston, where he averaged 19.7 points as a junior. The 6-foot-6 wing should provide some immediate scoring pop to a Gator back court that struggled with that at times during Mike White’s first season in Gainesville.

He may not start this season -- Florida already has Kasey Hill, KeVaughn Allen, Devin Robinson and Chris Chiozza on the roster -- but he’ll play an important role. Florida finished last season with a defense that ranked in the top 25 in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency metric while finishing 84th in offensive efficiency.

Barry’s got quite the back story. Not only is he the youngest son of Rick Barry -- and, therefore, the younger brother of Brent, Jon, Scooter and Drew -- he’s graduating Charleston with a degree in Physics. He also shoots free throws underhanded.

ESPN was the first to report his commitment.
