Stephen F. Austin coach Brad Underwood gets emotional over describing the impact of Thomas Walkup on the program.

Stephen F. Austin was one of the most fun underdogs to cheer for this weekend as the No. 14 seed Lumberjacks pulled off a convincing upset win over West Virginia and lost on a heart-breaking tip-in against Notre Dame.

After Sunday’s loss to the Fighting Irish, Stephen F. Austin head coach Brad Underwood addressed the media and got emotional when talking about senior Thomas Walkup. The 6-foot-4 Walkup was one of the breakout stars of this weekend as the captain of the Lumberjacks had 33 points and nine rebounds against West Virginia and 21 points and five assists against Notre Dame.

Here’s what Underwood had to say on Walkup.

Underwood and Walkup accomplished a lot together at Stephen F. Austin the last three seasons, so it is easy to see why so much emotion is there. The Lumberjacks made three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and beat VCU and West Virginia in the opening round in two of those trips. When you also factor in the astounding 59-1 Southland Conference record that Stephen F. Austin had the last three seasons and this group won a ton of games together.
