There are now three head coaching vacancies to be filled in Division I college basketball, as North Carolina A&T announced Friday that Cy Alexander has resigned. Associate head coach Jay Joyner will take over as interim head coach.

Alexander posted a record of 43-80 in four-plus seasons at the MEAC school, and he will be transitioning into a career in broadcasting according to the school release. His first game: the Aggies’ home contest against Savannah State Saturday afternoon.

“I have decided to step away from actively coaching to pursue other interests within athletics,” Alexander said in the release. “I look forward to pursuing those interests here at North Carolina A&T State University. I have a strong love for broadcasting, and I think being able to sharpen my skills on the Aggie basketball broadcasts will assists me in pursuing broadcasting as my next career.

“My decision to step down was a difficult one, but the last three years of my life have been tumultuous with the passing of my wife and mother. Therefore, I believe this decision was in the best interest of me and my family.”

This season North Carolina A&T has an overall record of 5-17, which includes a 2-6 mark in MEAC play. The Aggies have lost their last six conference games, and overall the team is on a nine-game losing streak since beating Grambling State December 17.

North Carolina A&T joins Prairie View A&M and UNLV as programs that have made coaching changes this season.
