Report: Could UConn five-star 2017 commit reclassify and play next season?

Brown, Zach

UConn received some interesting recruiting news this week as five-star Class of 2017 center commitment Zach Brown could reclassify to the Class of 2016 and potentially join the roster next season.

According to a report from Evan Daniels of Scout.com, the 7-foot-1 Brown could have the option to play for the Huskies next season but that decision likely won’t come until summer. Brown is a true junior in high school, but he recently transferred from his home in Miami to Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut to play a more challenging schedule and also be closer to his future school.

Brown is in great academic standing, so he would have the option to reclassify and join UConn’s program a year early if he wanted to.

UConn still has one scholarship left in the Class of 2016 and there are some front-court question marks for them for next season. The Huskies are already losing Shonn Miller and Philip Nolan and there is a small chance junior center Amida Brimah could leave early to turn pro -- however unlikely. UConn has also battled some injury issues with Brimah, and 2016 commit Juwan Durham -- a highly-touted big man -- is coming off of a torn ACL.

If Brown opted to reclassify to 2016, it would give the Huskies another big body inside to go along with Brimah, Kenton Facey, Steven Enoch and 2016 commit Mamadou Diarra.

It’s a nice option for UConn to have if they need another big man immediately for next season and Brown’s move to Putnam Science Academy also gives him the opportunity to play with another UConn commit in Diarra and a key UConn recruiting target in elite 2017 unsigned shooting guard Hamidou Diallo.

Regarded as the No. 17 overall prospect in the Class of 2017, according to Rivals, Brown likely wouldn’t be prepared to contribute that much if he went to UConn next season, but he has some long-term upside thanks to his gigantic size and improving post game.
