John Beilein: Caris LeVert can now walk ‘pain-free’, but he’s not ready to return

There has been a shroud of secrecy surrounding the lower leg injury that was suffered by Michigan guard Caris LeVert earlier this season.

He’s been out for the last three weeks as he has dealt with it while the Michigan basketball program has yet to actually put a label on the injury. LeVert has, twice in the last two years, broken a bone in his left foot that’s required surgery.

There was some good news to report following Sunday night’s loss to Iowa, however.

“He’s walking around pain-free,” head coach John Beilein said. “We’re going to get some more tests this week. We’ve been testing him physically, now medical tests.”

Here’s how Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free-Press describes the current situation:

There was only rehab available as an option to this point and every few days, they’ve tried to have him run through some physical challenges, to see how his leg responded.

If there was pain, they shut him down. They were just hoping for the time there was not.

Now that they reached that, there will be another thorough exam.

In other words, the Wolverines are going to be support cautious with their star because, in many ways, his future as a pro ball player may depend on the health of that foot.

So I get it.

But it has got to be frustrating, because Michigan, without LeVert, just knocked off Maryland at home. Imagine what they’ll be like when they get their all-american back.
