Xavier will be without freshman guard Edmond Sumner for the Musketeers’ top-10 clash with Butler on Saturday, a source confirmed to NBCSports.com.

The 6-foot-5 Sumner suffered a scary fall three minutes into a loss at Villanova on Thursday as he was taken off the floor on a stretcher and taken to the hospital. Sumner was able to move his extremities on the court and left the hospital later that afternoon to rejoin Xavier for their trip home.

Head coach Chris Mack told reporters on Friday that Sumner did not suffer a concussion during the fall.

Although Sumner appears to be recovering from the fall, it’s probably a smart move for Xavier to sit him out today. The Musketeers are in danger of starting 0-2 in the Big East, but they have the type of depth and balance that makes them a Big East title contender when he returns.

Sumner is averaging 11.0 points and a team-leading 3.1 assists per game this season for the Musketeers, who were 12-0 with him on the floor.
