Sedrick Barefield is transferring out of the SMU basketball program, a source told NBCSports.com.

Barefield is a freshman point guard from California. He was ranked No. 128 in the Class of 2015 by Rivals and was expected to be the future of the Mustang back court.

But this season has not exactly gone as planned. Barefield has dealt with three bouts of bronchitis in his first semester and has managed all of 16 minutes in the five games that he has played. He has missed SMU’s last four games.

The Mustangs are currently ranked 18th in the country, but they have been banned from the NCAA tournament for this season following an investigation into classes that Keith Frazier took to get eligible for his freshman season. The athletic department declined to appeal the postseason ban.

SMU is undefeated this season.
