Maryland sophomore guard Dion Wiley will likely miss the entire 2015-16 season after undergoing knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

According to a release from the school, Wiley will miss four months after the surgery, which would likely bring him back in mid-March. Rather than have Wiley play his first games of the season in the postseason, the Terps are likely to seek a medical redshirt to get his sophomore season back.

“I am really disappointed for Dion because he worked so hard in the offseason and was playing at a very high level,” Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said in the statement. “This is a big loss for our team as Dion was expected to be our starting shooting guard. Our doctors were encouraged about the surgery and we know that Dion will work tirelessly to return to the court.”

The 6-foot-4 Wiley averaged 4.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per game as a freshman coming off the bench. Without Wiley, Maryland could turn to sophomore wing Jared Nickens or senior Duke transfer Rasheed Sulaimon to fill his void. The loss of Wiley isn’t ideal for Maryland, but it comes at a position where they can withstand it without further injury.
