Friday afternoon the Michigan State Board of Trustees granted final approval on a major renovation project at the Breslin Center that’s expected to cost some $50 million. Not only will there be a renovation of the home building for the Michigan State basketball programs, but the Breslin Center will also be expanded to include the MSU Hall of History and the Draymond Green Strength and Conditioning Center.
Green donated $3.1 million for the project in September, leading to the school naming the strength and conditioning center in his honor. Construction is scheduled to begin in January, with an expected final completion date of June 2018. According to the school a substantial amount of progress is expected to be made by August 2017.
“What excites me about these renovations is that there really is something for everyone,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said Friday. “Jaws will drop when fans enter the Hall of History. Current student-athletes will benefit from the new weight room. Former players will enjoy a locker room reserved just for them. And the entire package should really excite recruits.
“I can’t wait to see the finished product.”
The Breslin Center last underwent a major renovation in 2001, with the men’s and women’s basketball programs getting new office spaces and two 8,000 square foot auxiliary gyms being built during that project. For this new endeavor, the first phase will focus on infrastructure upgrades and the expansion of the concourse level.
