Purdue is still awaiting the NCAA to clear McDonald’s All-American freshman power forward Caleb Swanigan, head coach Matt Painter confirmed on Monday.
In a report from Jason King of Bleacher Report, Swanigan and his relationship with adopted father Roosevelt Barnes is allegedly being questioned as Barnes is a Purdue graduate who adopted the big man in eighth grade.
“We’re still working through the process,” Painter said to King of the situation.
Barnes has maintained that he adopted Swanigan because he needed a stable place to live and he genuinely cared for him. Swanigan’s story was also chronicled by King in October and goes into detail about his story.
A very talented and bruising power forward, Swanigan is a two-time gold medal winner in the FIBA World Championships and is expected to be a major contributor as a scorer and rebounder for the Boilers. Paired with centers A.J. Hammons or Isaac Haas, Swanigan will help make for an imposing front line that can really be tough to defend.
