NEW YORK (AP) Dayton received 12 first-place votes, four more than runner-up Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10’s preseason poll.

Davidson, which had six first-place votes, was third followed by George Washington, which had one No. 1 vote in the annual poll of the conference’s coaches and selected media released Tuesday.

VCU, which will be playing without coach Shaka Smart who left for Texas, join Richmond, Saint Joseph’s, St. Bonaventure, La Salle and Massachusetts in the top 10. The last four teams were Duquesne, Saint Louis, George Mason and Fordham.

The preseason all-conference first team was made up of five juniors: Hassan Martin and E.C. Matthews of Rhode Island, Jack Gibbs of Davidson, Jordan Price of La Salle and DeAndre’ Bembry of Saint Joseph’s, who was also selected to the preseason all-defensive team.
