Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski will step down as head coach of USA Basketball after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“It is. It definitely is [my last event],’' Krzyzewski told ESPN.com. “I think it’s time to move ahead.”

The plan for now, Krzyzewski said, is to make a decision about his successor well prior to the start of the Olympics.

“Hopefully we can finish things up well with Rio and I would move onto something else with USA Basketball,’' Krzyzewski said. “But I think we’re ready as an organization to do that, and I’m excited about the future because [of] what we’ve done over the last 10 years.”

Krzyzewski, who was hired in 2005, has won the gold medal at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games in Beijing and London, respectively. He also won the 2010 and 2014 world championships, now known as the FIBA World Cup, all while winning a pair of national titles at his day job as the head coach at Duke.

Krzyzewski was hired at a time when USA Basketball’s international program was no longer the best in the world. When he took the job, Team USA was coming off of a sixth-place finish at the 2002 World Championships and a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics. Krzyzewski’s only loss as the head coach of Team USA came in the semifinals of the 2006 World Championships against Greece.
