NEW YORK (AP) Jack Powers, a former player, coach and athletic director at Manhattan College, will be the first Jasper to have his basketball uniform number retired.

No. 34 will be raised to the rafters of Draddy Gymnasium on Feb. 26, at halftime of the game with Iona.

Powers was the executive director of the NIT for more than 20 years and was the athletic director at his alma mater for nine years. He was the head coach of the Jaspers for 10 seasons, starting in 1968, and he posted a 142-114 record with four appearances in the NIT.

In his three seasons playing for Manhattan, Powers led the Jaspers to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including 1958 when they beat nationally ranked West Virginia and Jerry West at Madison Square Garden. He finished with 1,139 points.
