The NCAA has opened up an investigation into the San Diego State men’s basketball program, according to a report from CBSSports.com.

The report also states that the investigation, which are thought to include improper benefits, could end up yielding Level I violations, the highest level.

SDSU’s head coach is Steve Fisher, who has been with the program since 1999. He took over the Aztecs after he was run out of Michigan as a result of the Ed Martin Scandal. Martin was a booster for the program that was eventually found to have provided improper benefits to many Michigan basketball players, including Chris Webber, who received as much as $280,000 from Martin over a five-year period.

The scandal resulted in Michigan being stripped of the two Final Fours that the Fab Five reached in 1992 and 1993.

Fisher has built the Aztec program into one of the best on the West Coast with one of the nation’s rowdiest fan bases despite the fact that there was next-to-no history of basketball success when he took over. The Aztecs have been to six straight NCAA tournaments, routinely compete for Mountain West titles and are able to recruit top 100 players to campus.

SDSU officials released a statement on Tuesday night:

“Earlier today, San Diego State reached out to representatives of the NCAA’s Enforcement staff following a media report regarding allegations involving the school’s men’s basketball program. Members of the NCAA staff confirmed for the University that they have not commenced a formal investigation.

Prior to the media report today, the NCAA had not contacted any member of the University regarding an investigation into the program.

San Diego State takes all potential NCAA issues seriously and will cooperate fully with the NCAA.”
