There’s a new No. 1 player in the Class of 2017, says Rivals

On Wednesday morning, Rivals released their brand new Class of 2017 recruiting rankings, and there’s a surprise at the top.

Wendell Carter, a 6-foot-10 center from Atlanta that starred for the Nike EYBL champion Georgia Stars, is the No. 1 player in the class. It’s certainly a well-deserved honor, as Carter was terrific all summer long.

The freakishly-athletic, 6-foot-9 Missouri-native Michael Porter slid down one spot to No. 3 in the Top 150, making way for point guard Trevon Duval. Duval is a dynamic, 6-foot-3 playmaker that was one of the most impressive players on the AAU circuit this summer. To get an idea of just how good he’s been over the course of the last year, think about this: The Class of 2016 is loaded and it’s strongest position is the point guard spot, with six of the top 19 players identifying as lead guards.

And Duval?

He’s considered by many with valid opinions as the best point guard prospect in the country.

That’s saying a lot.

But it’s not a guarantee of anything, as Deandre Ayton -- a 6-foot-11 Amar’e Stoudemire clone that many called the best prospect in high school basketball for a long time -- has dropped to fourth in the Class of 2017.

The rest of the top 10 is filled out by Mohamed Bamba, Billy Preston, Jarred Vanderbilt, Troy Brown Jr., Brandon McCoy and Kris Wilkes.
