Tuesday evening Wyoming landed its second verbal commitment in the Class of 2016, as a power forward made his pledge to Larry Shyatt’s program less than a week after officially visiting the school.

6-foot-8 Irshad Hunte, who hails from Scarborough, Ontario, verbally committed to Wyoming with his Northern Kings grassroots program coach announcing the news. Hunte joins small forward Austin Mueller in Wyoming’s 2016 recruiting class to date, and he plays a position where the Cowboys will have both depth and youth moving forward.

As a junior at Saddleback Valley Christian Academy in California, Hunte was a first team Division 5AA All-CIF selection, helping lead his team to 23 wins and the second round of the CIF Division IV state tournament. While Hunte is slender in build (listed at 195 pounds), he’s an athletic forward who competes hard on both ends of the floor.

Hunte joins a front court that at present time doesn’t have a single upperclassman, Sophomore Alan Herndon (3.0 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 15.4 mpg) saw minutes last season (center Jonathan Barnes played sparingly), with fellow sophomore Hayden Dalton making the move from Central Wyoming College to Wyoming this summer.

The Cowboys, who are looking to account for the loss of four starters from last season’s Mountain West tournament title team including forwards Larry Nance Jr. and Derek Cooke, added freshmen Andrew Moemeka and Jordan Naughton to the front court as part of the 2015 recruiting class.
