In Georgetown’s release for its 2015-16 non-conference schedule the word “rival” is used three times in the opening paragraph. Matchups against Maryland, Syracuse and UConn highlight the Hoyas non-conference schedule, which was officially released on Monday.

The Gavitt Cup matchup with Maryland on Nov. 17 will be a major early-season test for the Hoyas, especially with the game coming on the road. Georgetown will host old Big East rival Syracuse at the Verizon Center on Dec. 5 as the start of a four-year home-and-home series.

After starting the Big East slate of games, the Hoyas travel to Hartford to face former conference foe UConn on Jan. 23.

Head coach John Thompson III also has the 2K Classic in the non-conference schedule as the Madison Square Garden event has Duke, Wisconsin and VCU to round out the field. The Badgers will play Georgetown in the semifinals before the winners and losers play the next day.

The rest of Georgetown’s non-conference schedule is pretty mediocre, but the 2K Classic and three other aforementioned games should give the Hoyas plenty of tests before Big East play begins.
