Monday marked the first day of classes at the University of Kansas. While five-star forward Cheick Diallo is enrolled, he’s still waiting to hear if he can play.

The 6-foot-9 Diallo committed to the Jayhawks in April, but has yet to be cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center. Kansas head coach Bill Self can see this dragging on, updating the status to reporters on Saturday, courtesy of Jesse Newell of the Topeka Capital-Journal.

“We’re hopeful sooner rather than later,” Self said, “but it wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t know anything for at least another month.”

“We certainly believe it should be a certain way, but it’s not about what we believe. It’s about what is right and what’s fair. Certainly we’ll fight hard for him.”

Diallo attended Our Savior New American (New York), which is currently under NCAA review. Pitt freshman Damon Wilson, another member of the Class of 2015, is still waiting to be cleared as well. On Sunday, Kassoum Yakwe reclassified and enrolled at St. John’s. His eligibility for the upcoming season is being called a “work in progress”.

A native of Mali, Diallo was ranked as the No. 5 overall recruit in the Class of 2015 by Rivals; one of two five-star forwards joining the Jayhawks this season with Carlton Bragg (No. 21 overall) being the other. Diallo capped his prep career by winning MVP honors at both the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.

Kansas opens the 2015-16 season on Nov. 13 at home against Northern Colorado.
