Michael Gbinije has made the Nigerian national team.

The Syracuse combo-guard has been with the team training since late-July and, on Wednesday, told Syracuse.com that he had been informed he will participate in the FIBA African Championship. He averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 boards, 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals as a junior with the Orange.

“Playing for the Nigeria national team is not only a unique opportunity, but it is also a blessing in which I truly appreciate,” he told the paper. “Making the Olympics would be an awesome experience if we qualify.”

The winner of the tournament will make the Olympics.

Gbinije’s father is from Nigeria. He moved to the United States in the 1980s.
