Purdue landed a much-needed guard in its Class of 2016 haul as scoring point guard Carsen Edwards pledged to the program, a source confirmed to NBCSports.com. The native of Texas took an official visit to the Boilermakers during the summer and helps the program offset the recruiting loss of former commitment C.J. Walker, who decommitted during the spring. Edwards was a primary recruiting target for head coach Matt Painter and he landed one of his key targets with this pledge.

The 5-foot-11 Edwards can really fill it up from the perimeter as he was a valuable scorer this spring and summer with Houston Hoops. During the spring and summer, Edwards averaged 15 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 23 games for Houston Hoops. Edwards shot 45 percent from the field, 80 percent from the free-throw line and 36 percent from 3-point territory.

Edwards is the first commitment for Purdue in the Class of 2016 and he’ll help as a scorer and distributor when he enters the program.
