With the status of 7-footer Georgios Tsalmpouris still undetermined, Iowa State had a need for an additional front court option to provide depth behind the likes of Georges Niang and Jameel McKay. Thursday afternoon head coach Steve Prohm took care of that with the addition of a 6-foot-9 forward who back in early May committed to SMU.

Charlotte native Simeon Carter will be headed to Ames instead, with news of his change first reported by Scout.com. According to the report, there was a delay in Carter’s admission to SMU which in turn led to his looking around at other programs.

Yet even with the switch from SMU to Iowa State, expectations for Carter don’t change as he’ll be asked to provide depth for a front court that already has some talented contributors. In addition to Niang and McKay, Iowa State returns Abdel Nader and adds Marquette transfer Deonte Burton and freshman Brady Ernst to the front court.

Having Tsalmpouris would make the Cyclones even deeper, but with his status still up in the air adding another player isn’t a bad move for Iowa State. The Cyclones will leave for their preseason trip to Spain next week, which should help the team get used to Prohm’s way of doing things in a game setting ahead of his first season at the helm.
