North Carolina head coach Roy Williams made a tremendous personal gesture this week by writing a personalized letter to an ailing lifelong Tar Heel fan.

According to a report from Sam Strong of ESPN.com, Williams sent the surprise letter to Charlie Humphries, a father of three who has been battling melanoma for three years.

The letter, which can be viewed in its entirety here, moved Humphries to tears and encouraged him to be strong during a difficult time.

Sports has a powerful way of helping certain people cope with different difficulties in life and this is a tremendous gesture by Williams. It’s nice that Humphries knows that he has the support and thoughts of his favorite basketball program behind him during his battle.
