An American team that includes seven collegiate players won their opener in the Pan-Am Games, coming from behind to knock off Venezuela, 85-62.

Former NBA players Damien Wilkins and Anthony Randolph led the way with 21 and 16 points, respectively, while another pro -- Bobby Brown -- chipped in with 12. Arizona’s Kaleb Tarcszewski was the most productive collegian, finishing with eight points and 13 boards, while Baylor’s Taurean Waller-Prince chipped in with seven points and seven boards. Wichita State’s Ron Baker added seven points and a critical stretch defensively.

Likely preseason all-americans Melo Trimble and Malcolm Brogdon struggled. Brogdon had just two points and Trimble finished with five points, one assists and three turnovers. Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine played just under four minutes and Louisiana’s Shawn Long didn’t even get off the bench.

There were a handful of other collegians in action as well.

  • Kentucky freshman point guard Jamal Murray had 12 points and two assists to help lead a team full of Canadians that college basketball fans will recognize to a 105-88 win over the Dominican Republic. Oregon’s Dillon Brooks had two points in less that seven minutes of action while Gonzaga’s Kyle Wiltjer managed just 38 seconds of playing time.
  • In that loss to Canada, Seton Hall’s Angel Delgado had 15 points and six boards. South Florida-commit Andres Feliz had six points on 3-for-10 shooting while his future USF teammate Nehemias Morillo had just two points. Morehead State sophomore Miguel Dicent chipped in with five points.
  • George Washington’s Patricio Garino had four points in seven minutes in Argentina’s 86-84 loss to Mexico.
  • The Puerto Rican team being coached by Rick Pitino was down 31-6 at the end of the first quarter to Brazil, eventually losing 92-59. Gary Browne, who graduated from West Virginia this spring, was scoreless in four minutes of playing time.
