Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said that freshman guard Ryan McMahon will redshirt this season, according to a report from Jeff Greer of the Courier-Journal.

The 6-foot-0, 160-pound McMahon comes to the Cardinals from Florida after committing this spring and enrolling in summer school this month, but he’s not physically ready for the rigors of the ACC. The move also gives Louisville an additional scholarship to work with for this upcoming season, which they’re using to target a few different options. One of those options is high school shooting guard Maverick Rowan, who could reclassify to the Class of 2015 and play next season.

This move to redshirt McMahon doesn’t come as any sort of big surprise. McMahon was expected to potentially redshirt when he committed this spring. This is more or less the official confirmation that the Cardinals are still targeting someone else for the 2015-16 roster.

Pitino at least added some insurance in the form of walk-on commitment Jay Henderson this week and the team also landed five-star small forward V.J. King late this week.
