Florida picked up a commitment for the first time in the Mike White era this week as the team landed junior college forward Justin Leon.

The 6-foot-8 Leon is a wing forward from Shawnee Community College in Illinois and hails from Arkansas. He was originally signed to play for White and Louisiana Tech and was honorable mention All-America in NJCAA’s Division I this past season. Leon averaged 21.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent from the field during his sophomore season.

Leon originally signed with Louisiana Tech this spring, only to open things up once White left for Florida. The addition of Leon replaces the scholarship spot vacated by recent Washington commit Noah Dickerson. The Gators still have one scholarship remaining and could opt to roll it over or use it on a mid-season transfer.

While Billy Donovan didn’t use junior college recruiting very often during his tenure, Leon is a sign that White could look to go that route a little more often. For this season it makes sense as the Gators lost a handful of front court options and Leon brings some more experience than a typical high school recruit.
