Report: North Carolina close to finalizing contract extension for Roy Williams

One day after North Carolina released the Notice of Allegations sent to the school by the NCAA in late May, it’s been reported that head coach Roy Williams is on the verge of receiving a contract extension.

According to Inside Carolina, the UNC Board of Trustees is finalizing a new contract for Williams, whose current deal runs through the 2017-18 season. No terms for the new deal were mentioned in the report.

Williams’ name came up just once in the Notice of Allegations, and that was to note that he was interviewed by the NCAA. With that being the case, the general feeling is that Thursday turned out to be a good day for the Hall of Fame head coach.

North Carolina was charged with five Level 1 violations of NCAA rules, the most severe, including lack of institutional control in relation to an academic fraud scandal. However, while the men’s basketball and football programs were mentioned in the report the women’s basketball program was on the receiving end of the most severe allegations.

North Carolina returns four starters from last season’s Sweet 16 team, led by rising senior guard Marcus Paige, and they’re expected to be a contender both in the ACC and nationally as a result.
