Wednesday afternoon Louisville announced that rising sophomore power forward/center Anas Mahmoud will undergo surgery on his left knee to repair the torn medial meniscus in his left knee. According to the school the procedure will take place Thursday, with Mahmoud expected to be sidelined anywhere from four to six weeks.

The 7-footer from Cairo, Egypt was on the periphery of the Louisville rotation as a freshman, accounting for 1.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in just over seven minutes of action per game. Mahmoud played in 30 of Louisville’s 36 games, even making two starts for Rick Pitino’s team.

The injury is not expected to prevent Mahmoud from playing on the team’s summer trip to Puerto Rico, which is scheduled to begin August 10. Mahmoud is one of the front court pieces Louisville will call upon in 2015-16 as they look to account for the loss of Montrezl Harrell, who entered the NBA Draft at the conclusion of his junior season.

Returning in the front court next season are rising redshirt junior Mangok Mathiang, rising sophomores Mahmoud Chinanu Onuaku, Jaylen Johnson and Matz Stockman, and Louisville adds incoming freshman Raymond Spalding.
