John Calipari is expected to receive a contract extension that will keep him under contract with Kentucky through the 2021-22 season, according to multiple reports. Kentucky Sports Radio was the first to report the news.

The contract is a one-year extension on Calipari’s current contract. The total value of the deal is expected to be $54 million, which means that Cal will be making just under $8 million a season.

It’s not a coincidence that these reports are coming out around the same time that New Orleans fired head coach Monty Williams. The Hornets count two former Calipari stars, superstar Anthony Davis and guard Tyreke Evans, on their roster, and Calipari’s named was quickly linked to the opening. There is also speculation that he could be in contention for the head coaching job in Cleveland should the Cavs and David Blatt part ways after the playoffs.

The contract includes a $1.6 million retention bonus that will be paid out on July 1st if Cal has not left for the NBA.
