Florida will lose redshirt junior guard Eli Carter to transfer, he announced on Monday. The 6-foot-2 guard began his career at Rutgers before transferring to the Gators and dealing with an injury-plagued two seasons in Gainesville.
Carter will graduate from Florida and become immediately eligible as a graduate transfer to play for another program next season.
''We appreciate everything that Eli has done in his two years in Gainesville,’' Florida head coach Billy Donovan said in a statement. ''We all wish him well and will do whatever we can to help him take this next step in his career.’'
After a productive season at Rutgers in which he averaged 14.9 points per game, Carter was never able to recapture that kind of production due to a gruesome broken leg that he suffered before choosing to attend Florida. After playing 53 total minutes during the 2013-14 season, Carter redshirted for the rest of the year and also dealt with that injury a bit during the following season.
Carter averaged 8.8 points per game last season to go along with 2 rebounds and 2 assists per game.
The departure of Carter comes after Michael Frazier and Chris Walker left early for the 2015 NBA Draft.
