It’s been a tumultuous month for Nebraska’s program as the program lost guard Tarin Smith to transfer and forward Walter Pitchford to the NBA Draft in the last few weeks.

While the program still awaits Terran Petteway’s decision on whether to go pro or not, the Cornhuskers did get some good news on Tuesday as Class of 2015 point guard Bakari Evelyn announced his commitment on Twitter. The 6-foot-3 Evelyn is a native of Detroit, but played his senior season at Hillcrest Academy in Arizona.

The three-star Evelyn helped his former high school, Southfield Christian, to three consecutive Class D titles in Michigan before trying to play his senior season at Gilbert Christian Academy in Arizona. When he was ruled ineligible at Gilbert, Evelyn played nine games for Hillcrest, averaging 25.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game, according to HuskersOnline.com.

Evelyn took an official visit to Nebraska last week and also took an official visit to UTEP during the spring before making his decision. With Smith leaving the program, Evelyn will compete with senior Benny Parker and fellow freshman Glynn Watson for early minutes at lead guard.

Nebraska will now look to add another big body with its other open scholarship and they could be in the market for a transfer.
