Less than a year after undergoing a medical procedure to replace a pacemaker implanted into his chest, Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg will undergo another procedure next week. As announced by the school Friday morning, Hoiberg will undergo open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve next Friday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“After my initial surgery to replace my aortic root 10 years ago, I knew that this was something that would need to be done at some point,” Hoiberg said in the release. “My valve has severe regurgitation and the time has come to get it replaced. I am hopeful that this will be my last surgery and I’m looking forward to getting this behind me.”

Hoiberg underwent the aortic root operation in June 2005, a couple months after he’d completed his tenth season in the NBA and the issue would ultimately result in his retirement from the game after missing the entire 2005-06 season.
