Minnesota freshman guard Nate Mason will miss up to eight weeks after having surgery on his right thumb, according to head coach Richard Pitino.

Pitino announced that Mason is having surgery on Twitter.

Mason came on strong his freshman season as he averaged 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals for Minnesota this season. He also made eight starts and started five of the last six games.

Losing a player in the offseason isn’t the worst thing in the world, but Mason can’t get in the gym and work on his shot for the first part of the offseason. That could hurt his development a bit, but the freshman is still going to be a key piece for the Golden Gophers along with Joey King and Carlos Morris entering next season.
