This weekend, Northern Iowa is looking to advance to the program’s second Sweet 16 in five years. Back in 2010, the Panthers cemented their place in NCAA tournament history with an upset over top-seeded Kansas in the second round.

The hero of that game was Ali Farokhmanesh.

Northern Iowa was leading 63-62 with 37 seconds left in the game. With 30 seconds remaining on the shot clock Farokhmanesh buried a 3-pointer only the certifiably insane would have attempted. Northern Iowa ended up winning 69-67.

Farokhmanesh was hired as a graduate assistant at Nebraska this past summer, and it just so happens that Kansas is playing its opening round games in Omaha. On Friday, the Omaha World-Herald had Farokhmanesh interview Jayhawk fans, asking them about their favorite and least favorite March Madness memories.

A lot of KU fans remembered the name Ali Farokhmanesh, although, many forgot the face. They certainly haven’t forgotten the shot.
