Charge call negates one of the best dunks of the NCAA tournament’s opening weekend

wyoming

Friday afternoon’s matchup between No. 12 Wyoming and No. 5 Northern Iowa has all the makings of the game of day. It features two well-coached teams and has one of the best one-on-one battles between Larry Nance Jr. and Seth Tuttle.

It also has players who aren’t afraid to attack the hoop. Enter Wyoming wing Derek Cooke Jr.

This was 20 seconds in!

However, the official called a charge on Cooke, who does not look too happy about that.

Again, this is why I disagree with the charge call. It puts the offensive player between a rock and a hard place.

Cooke has already begun his motion toward the basket before Matt Bohannon has his feet set outside the restricted area. He has no way to counter this. Cooke got himself open and created a lane to the basket only to have a secondary defender slid in at the last second. Punish the offensive player for all that work, reward the defense for taken a fall. Seems fair.
