We’ve had a couple of crazy finishes already tonight, but we’ll be hard-pressed to find a wilder finish to a game this tournament than what just happened in No. 11 UCLA’s 60-59 win over No. 6 SMU.

Before we get to the game-winning “basket”, let’s rewind.

UCLA was up 44-34 on the Mustangs when Nic Moore took over. He scored 11 points in a 19-0 run for the Mustangs, which opened up a 53-44 lead. UCLA responded with eight straight points to cut the lead to one, but SMU immediately responded with six straight of their own.

After Bryce Alford hit his eighth three of the game to cut the lead to four, UCLA forced a turnover and Norman Powell hit two free throws with under a minute left. On the ensuing inbounds, SMU threw the ball away and after a UCLA timeout, Alford threw up a three that looked like it was going to clank off of the side of the rim. But Yannick Moreira leaped up to try and catch what could have ended up being an airball and he was called for a goaltend.

Three points for UCLA. What do you think?:

Here’s another look at it, which makes the call look like it might have actually been right:

Was this the right call?

In the end, it doesn’t matter. SMU missed two shots on the final possession meaning that UCLA will advance to take No. 14 UAB in the Round of 32.

Alford led the way for the Bruins, hitting 9-for-11 from beyond the arc and scoring 27 points. Powell added 19 points, six boards and four assists in the win.
