Daryl Gross is out as Athletic Director at Syracuse, according to a statement released by the university on Wednesday morning.

“Dr. Gross has asked to conclude his tenure as Director of Athletics and transition to a new role at the University that can benefit from his background and experience in the areas of marketing and advancement,” Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud said. “He believes this transition will allow SU Athletics to move forward and position itself for continued future success.”

Gross had been in the role for more than a decade, overseeing Syracuse’s move to the ACC from the Big East. He was also in charge for what the NCAA determined to be more than a decade of rule-breaking.

Earlier this month, the NCAA released a report detailing academic impropriety and illegal benefits in the Syracuse athletic department over the course of the last 10 years, violations that earned the school a $1 million fine, got basketball coach Jim Boeheim suspended for nine games next season and caused the NCAA to vacate 108 wins. The Orange will also be forced to give up three scholarships a year over the next four years.

Gross was directly implicated in that report, calling a meeting of athletic department officials in 2012 to try and find a way to keep center Fab Melo eligible. The course of action that group picked was to pursue changing a grade that was a year old and having basketball staff members do the work necessary to change that grade.
