Wednesday afternoon No. 19 North Carolina will open ACC tournament play against Boston College, which beat Georgia Tech by a point Tuesday, and the Tar Heels could be without one of their starting big men.

In his pre-ACC tournament press conference Tuesday, head coach Roy Williams stated that Kennedy Meeks hasn’t practiced the last two days due to illness. With that being the case, it’s looking doubtful that the sophomore forward will be available against Boston College.

“He was out yesterday and didn’t practice, and he’s not going to practice today so I don’t even know” Williams said when asked about Meeks’ status for Wednesday. “He’s running a temperature. They got it down last night and it was back up this morning.

“They tested him for mono, strep [throat] and everything comes up negative so I have no idea...well I have a great idea that he won’t play tomorrow, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see after that.”

Meeks is currently averaging 12.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for the Tar Heels, who enter the ACC tournament with a 21-10 record. No Meeks would mean more minutes for Isaiah Hicks, and in North Carolina’s 79-68 win in Chestnut Hill February 7 Hicks produced his best game as a Tar Heel.

Hicks scored a career-high 21 points to go along with five rebounds in 28 minutes of action, and that was a game he started in place of Meeks.
