Earlier this month, we shared a touching, devastating story about two of the three young muslim students that were senselessly gunned down in Chapel Hill.

Abdul-Malik Abu, a practicing muslim and a freshmen on the N.C. State basketball team, was close with one of the victims, Deah Barakat, and his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha. After the murders, Abu posted a heartfelt tribute to his friend on Instagram that included this sentence: “For the short time I’ve known you, you blessed me with the opportunity to attend your wedding, a wedding I see as my first real wedding.”

On Tuesday night, after the Wolfpack went into Chapel Hill and knocked off No. 15 North Carolina, Abu posted the following:

That’s a screengrab of a picture that Barakat posted after N.C. State beat Duke, one where he quoted Abu as saying that he would beat the Wolfpack’s two biggest rivals as a wedding gift.

I can’t imagine how bittersweet last night must have been for Abu.
