GAME OF THE DAY: Rider 85, Manhattan 77 (OT)

Kevin Baggett’s Broncs are now in sole possession of second place in the MAAC as a result of their overtime win over Manhattan in Lawrenceville. Matt Lopez scored 27 points and grabbed ten rebounds to lead the way for Rider (10-4 MAAC), which also completed the season sweep over the now 9-5 Jaspers. Emmy Andujar (19 points, 11 rebounds) and Ashton Pankey (16 and 12) both posted double-doubles for the Jaspers, but they shot just 39.3% from the field as a team in the loss.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1. Iowa 71, No. 18 Maryland 55

The Terrapins started poorly, making one field goal and committing eight turnovers over the first 11 minutes of Sunday’s game in Iowa City and the resulting hole was too deep to climb out of. Aaron White scored 17 points to lead three Hawkeyes in double figures, and since losing three straight (two to Wisconsin) Iowa has now won back-to-back games. As for Maryland, their last three road losses have all been by at least 16 points.

2. Boise State 61, San Diego State 46

A personal 9-0 run from Nick Duncan gave the Broncos a 17-4 lead and they didn’t look back, beating the Aztecs by 15 to pull into a tie for first place in the Mountain West (in the loss column). The impressive thing about Boise State’s win is that they did so with leading scorer Derrick Marks shooting 5-for-16 from the field. Boise State limited San Diego State to 35.7% shooting, and they scored 25 points off of 13 SDSU turnovers. Boise State’s now 7-3, with Wyoming and SDSU boasting 8-3 records. Given how the Broncos started off conference play, losing their first three games, this is an impressive turnaround by Leon Rice’s team.

3. Indiana 70, Michigan 67

Troy Williams scored 20 points and Yogi Ferrell 18 as the Hoosiers held off the Wolverines in Bloomington. Zak Irvin scored 23 but it wasn’t enough for Michigan, whose comeback effort fell short as Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman missed a corner three as time expired. Indiana’s now one of four teams that are 7-4 in Big Ten play, with first-place Wisconsin now having a three-game cushion in the loss column thanks to the Maryland loss noted above.

STARRED

1. D’Angelo Russell, Ohio State

In the Buckeyes’ 79-60 win at Rutgers the talented freshman posted the fourth triple-double in school history, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

2. Shadrac Casimir, Iona

Casimir shot 9-for-14 from three in the Gaels’ 89-67 win over Marist, scoring 33 points. The freshman scored 40 in a win over Delaware State earlier this season.

3. Joseph Young, Oregon

29 points, ten rebounds and eight assists in the Ducks’ 95-72 win over Washington State. Starting forward Jordan Bell served a one-game suspension in the win.

STRUGGLED

1. Washington

In their 64-50 loss to Oregon State, the Huskies committed 22 turnovers and shot 35.7% from the field. Washington has now lost five straight games.

2. Jake Layman, Maryland

Maryland’s second-leading scorer was quiet in their 71-55 loss at Iowa, scoring four points on 1-for-4 shooting.

3. T.J. Curry, Marist

Curry scored three points on 1-for-9 shooting in the Red Foxes’ 89-67 loss at Iona.

NOTABLES

  • Another note on No. 20 Ohio State’s win over Rutgers: Jae’Sean Tate continued his solid play of late by scoring 20 points. With Marc Loving suspended, the freshman has stepped up at the right time for Thad Matta’s team.
  • E. Victor Nickerson led six players in double figures with 16 points as Valparaiso beat Oakland 82-76. The Crusaders are now 9-2 in the Horizon League.
  • Oregon State moved to 14-0 at home with a 64-50 win over Washington. Wayne Tinkle’s young squad has struggled on the road, but they’re still 7-4 in conference play.
  • Miami ended its three-game losing streak with a 56-46 win over Clemson. Head coach Jim Larrañaga and his staff wore Carolina blue shirts and ties in honor of the late Dean Smith.
  • Rhode Island moved into a tie for first in the Atlantic 10 with a 79-74 win over Richmond. E.C. Matthews scored 24 and Hassan Martin added 16 points and 16 rebounds.
