UConn women’s head coach Geno Auriemma wasn’t the only college basketball coach with a milestone win this week. Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Herb Magee reached career win No. 1,000 on Saturday as Division II Philadelphia University held off Post University for an 80-60 win.

Known in basketball circles as the Shot Doctor, Magee is the fourth men’s college basketball head coach at a four-year school to reach 1,000 wins after McKendree University head coach Harry Statham, Oregon Tech head coach Danny Miles and Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Magee has spent his entire basketball career as a player or coach at Philadelphia University, which was known as the Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science when he began his playing career.

As a player, Magee amassed 2,235 points during his college career and was a two-time All-American. Magee was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 62nd pick of the 1963 NBA Draft but broke his fingers before training camp and opted to return to his alma mater as an assistant coach under head coach Buckey Harris.

Harris retired in 1967 and Magee has been the head coach of the program since before the 1967-68 season. Magee led Philadelphia University to a national championship in 1970. Saturday’s win for the Rams makes them 15-6 on the season and pushes Magee’s career record to 1000-397.
