Assigned Reading: Wayne Estes was an all-american who died hours after scoring 2,000th point

You’ve probably never heard of the name Wayne Estes, which makes sense.

He was an all-american that played for Utah State in the mid-1960s, but he played his last college basketball games 50 years. He never played in the NBA, but it’s not because he didn’t have the ability.

In 1965, he spent the season in a race with Rick Barry for the nation’s scoring title, as Aaron Torres of FOX Sports chronicled. On Feb. 8th, 1965, Estes scored 48 points against the University of Denver, the final basket pushing him past the 2,000 point plateau.

That would be the last basket Estes ever scored. He passed away just hours later.
