GAME OF THE DAY: Indiana 80, Illinois 74

There are four teams in the Big Ten with one conference loss, and one of them is Indiana. Tom Crean’s Hoosiers moved to 4-1 in conference play with a six-point win in Champaign, with Troy Williams (nine rebounds) and James Blackmon Jr. scoring 21 points apiece to lead the way offensively. Kendrick Nunn scored 24 and Ahmad Starks added 19 off the bench for the Fighting Illini, who have alternated wins and losses in the four games played since they lost leading scorer Rayvonte Rice to a broken left hand.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1. DePaul 71, St. John’s 67 (OT): The last time the Blue Demons won at least four conference games: 2007-08, and DePaul began that season 4-2 in Big East play before finishing 6-12. Can this group finish in better fashion? That remains to be seen, but this current stretch is quite the turnaround for Oliver Purnell’s team considering how poorly they played at the Diamond Head Classic last month. Billy Garrett Jr. scored 13 of his 20 points from the foul line and Myke Henry added 19 in the win. As for the Red Storm, a season that looked so promising gets worse with this defeat, as they’re now 1-4 in conference play. And with D’Angelo Harrison dealing with a calf strain, he was essentially a decoy down the stretch Sunday. With their lack of depth, that’s a big concern for St. John’s moving forward.

2. No. 15 North Carolina 68, Virginia Tech 53: The Tar Heels did what they had to do in Chapel Hill, taking care of the undermanned Hokies to move to 4-1 in ACC play despite committing 17 turnovers. Justin Jackson, who scored a total of 21 points in the three game prior, accounted for 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the win. North Carolina dominated the glass against one of the worst rebounding teams in the country, rebounding 47.1% of their misses on the night. Adam Smith (11 points) and Shane Henry (ten) were Virginia Tech’s lone double-digit scorers, and as a team the Hokies shot just 9-for-24 inside of the arc.

3. Washington 85, Oregon 77: After getting off to an 0-3 start to conference play Washington needed to take care of business at home against the Oregon schools this weekend. Lorenzo Romar’s team completed the sweep with a win over the Ducks, erasing a ten-point halftime deficit with their two starting big men (Shawn Kemp Jr. and Robert Upshaw) being able to stay on the floor after dealing with foul trouble in the first half. Guards Nigel Williams-Goss and Andrew Andrews combined to score 41 points, with Upshaw (13 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks) being the anchor in the middle and freshman Donaven Dorsey (13 points, five rebounds) providing a much-needed spark off the bench. Dillon Brooks led Oregon with 16 points, but the Ducks shot just 39.5% from the field in the second half while Washington made 65.5% of its looks.

STARRED

1. C.J. Carter, Omaha: Carter’s Mavericks didn’t win, falling 89-84 to IUPUI, but he did his best to lead the way by scoring 45 points on 19-for-25 shooting from the field (7-for-8 3PT).

2. Ousmane Drame, Quinnipiac: Drame posted his 12th double-double of the season in the Bobcats’ 72-71 win at Marist, accounting for 21 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.

3. Derrick Marks and James Webb III, Boise State: Marks (31 points, five rebounds) and Webb (23 and seven) combined to score 54 of the Broncos’ 69 points in a ten-point win at New Mexico. Webb shot 7-for-7 from three on the night.

STRUGGLED

1. Aaron Cosby and Nnanna Egwu, Illinois: Cosby missed all five of his shot attempts in a loss to Indiana, going scoreless in 18 minutes of action. As for Egwu, he finished the game with no points and two rebounds before fouling out with just over two minutes left in the game.

2. Hugh Greenwood, New Mexico: Greenwood scored six points on 3-for-14 shooting in the Lobos’ 69-59 loss to Boise State.

3. Joseph Young, Oregon: Young found the going tough against Washington, making just three of his 12 field goal attempts and scoring eight points in the 85-77 loss.
